The End of an Era

The original manuscript of the Union Ibo Bible, written in Tom’s own handwriting, is held by the British and Foreign Bible Society and was sent to them as soon as the Bible was printed.
Dennis’s death at the age of 47 was a severe blow to Mattie and the children, to his own family, and to the many Africans and Europeans who had worked closely with him.
Although his major work, the Union Ibo Bible, had been printed, it was expected to undergo continual revision and improvement.
Much additional literature in Union Igbo was also anticipated. At the same time, there remained a vast amount of evangelistic and educational work to be done in Iboland—work that Dennis himself had set aside in order to concentrate on translation.
It is a matter of regret that some of the evils Dennis and his team had abolished in Igbo land through the spread of the Gospel later resurfaced.
